The Careful Use Of Photo Editing In The World Of Journalism

Years ago, photo editing was a laborious and tedious process. If you wanted to change more than the bare basics, such as lighting or darkening a photo, you could figure on many hours of work ahead of you.

A simple task we now take for granted, like taking out a feature from the photo, meant creating a whole new picture. You would then have to replace the missing element with other bits. For example, if you had a picture of a group that included Stalin and you wanted to paint out one of his associates, you were probably looking at days of work.

Nowadays that is no longer the case. With Paint, and Photoshop, and similar programs, you can change elements of your photos quickly and easily.

It’s also now much easier to change the picture entirely. This can be very unfortunate. You can now take an image and, without a lot of difficulty, take out elements or add elements that were not there when the photo was taken.

This brings up a sticky point, where photojournalism is concerned. Journalists, including photojournalists, are supposed to accurately present what happened. There is a difference between correcting the color cast of a picture, and changing a dull sky to a dark and stunning sunset.

Other small changes are tantamount to telling lies to the viewer. For instance, if you add smoke to a scene, or add more people to make a crowd seem larger, this isn’t making it more dramatic or enhancing its representativeness. You are fictionalizing the image and it is inappropriate.

Some would argue that there is a fine line between changing for editorial reasons and going too far. The two may be close at times but the bottom line is, the picture’s content must not have been changed. If there has been anything added to or taken from the photo in a way that changes the meaning of the image, the photographer has gone too far.

Remember this when you edit your own photos. It’s one thing if the photo is meant to be “art.” Then, the photographer can do whatever, it isn’t supposed to be strictly representative. News photography, while it can be artful, is not art and a photojournalist is a journalist and not an artist.

Check Out The Features Of The Sony HDR-CX550V And The HDR-XR550V Camcorders

Released in 2010, Sony’s new high definition digital camcorders are full-featured products for consumers. In comparing Sony HDR-CX550V and HDR-XR550V camcorders, both share most of the same features, with the type of memory, and the storage capacity being the main difference.

Where the two camcorders differ, and where most consumers look when considering purchasing a product, is the amount of memory. Both two Sony products, both have relatively large, expandable storage capacity. The HDR-XR550V is the big brother, holding a 240 gigabyte hard drive, which handles up to 100 hours of high definition recording. Using a flash memory format, the HDR-CX550V holds around 26 hours of video, with 64 gigabytes.

If more storage is required, both camcorders are upgradeable with memory cards. Whereas previous Sony products only supported the Memory Stick Duo, and associated formats, these camcorders also support the non-proprietary SD/SDHC form.

Both cameras support video recording in 1920 x 1080 resolution, and support playback in 1080/60p format via a built in HDMI port. One downside of this is that the port used is a mini-HDMI port, which means an adaptor may be required. Users can also transfer photos and videos to PC via a USB 2.0 connection.

Aside from the video capture aspect of both cameras, they are each capable of capturing still images, as with most digital camcorders. 12 Mega-pixel images are supported in still image-only mode, while 8.3 megapixel images can be captured while simultaneously shooting video.

The LCD screen on both the HDR-CX550v and HDR-XR550v is a 3.5″ TruBlack display, which improves viewing by reducing glare. There is also a . 27″ color viewfinder for shooting without the flip out display. A 26.3mm G-lens allows shooting of wide angle images, and is capable of 10x optical zoom, along with 120x digital zoom.

Both camcorders also support useful features including Face Detection, for capturing human images correctly. Geotagging is available via the built in GPS receiver, allowing users to add location data to their shooting. Image stabilization is designed to reduce camera shake, and works in both still and video shooting.

Both the Sony HDR-CX550V and Sony HDR-XR550V are full featured handheld camcorders that provide users with a wide set of features. The primary difference between them is the amount of memory, and type of storage, which ultimately determines the price point. Purchasers will find either camcorder provides the same basic feature - high definition video, and high quality still images. Ultimately the choice comes down to how much recording time they require between transfers, and the price they are willing to pay.
