Understanding the 2012 Prophecies and Predictions

The prophecies of Armageddon in 2012 are common across the web, and many people believe in them. Most of these are based on the Mayan calendar which is scheduled to terminate on December 21st of that year.

The Mayan calendar marks the end of the cycle on December 21. It is called a baktun, and it marks the ending of a major cycle. A few people claim that this will be the end of the world, while numerous others declare it starts a new celestial cycle. In truth, the Mayans left this calendar unfinished in that much of the data that should have been included was in no way finished. Scholars examining this culture say it is merely an crucial event that was noted by the Mayans themselves while making no proclamation of the world coming to an end.

You will also see news stories where Nostradamus, the renowned predictor from France, also alleges the world is terminating at this time. In truth, he states in his own writings that the quatrains are valid only until 3797. Even more, there is no indication of the world terminating, and no where in any of the quatrains did he include the year 2012.

There are an abundance of added prophecies too. Alien invasions and a planet hitting the earth are the most familiar ones. While it is impossible to say aliens do not exist because we have not ventured outside of our own galaxy, the probability of this being the ending of the world would be really unlikely. As to a planet slamming into ours, there are no planets that are out of their orbit, or even any headed straight at us. Scientists watch these things and data would be released from scientific organizations if it were true.

The natural disasters that are predicted to happen include earthquakes, solar flares, volcanoes and the like it. These very well could happen but if they do come about in 2012 it would seem to be nothing more than a coincidence. The environment is numerous years away from being unable to sustain itself. The other natural disasters would already be showing signs; however, there is no scientific substantiation to support this.

Predictions of Armageddon in 2012 are very much the crying wolf it was during the Y2K scare. With no substantiation, the odds of this happening are very slight.
