Sun Peaks Municipality is a specially designated municipal government allowed to be established for a mountain resort. It is the first such governmental body of its kind. Before its newly acquired status, it was simply an alpine ski resort located about 50 km northeast of Kamloops in the province of British Columbia.

Kamloops is a city located in the south central part of the province in the Thompson Nicola Regional District. It lies near a lake with the same name and nearby Thompson River. The new municipal unit originated as a small ski hill operated by a developing company. In 1993, the province entered into an agreement with the predecessor to Sun Peaks Resort Corp., for the expansion and development of resort facilities. As a result, it became the largest interior ski resort. The establishment of the new government structure is the next phase in its evolution.

The new government was established on June 28, 2010. As a mountain resort granted this privilege, a new era has begun. Financing will come from local taxpayers and from provincial grant funding for small communities. As a designated Mountain Resort Municipality, it will also receive a portion of the hotel HST levied.

This first beneficiary of special legislation framed to enhance tourism will have development, finance and business promotion, tools. The intended purpose of the special status granted by law is to help resorts fulfill their tourism attracting capabilities. As part of a designated region, the new local government qualifies for supporting tools designed to build their abilities.

The Mayor is assisted by four councillors. According to the special legislation under which the municipality was established, one councillor is appointed by the provincial government. They should be Canadian citizens over eighteen, who have been provincial residents for six months or more. Residents who are eligible to vote do not have to own local property. But, otherwise they must meet the criteria required of non residents. Their local residency should be established at least thirty days preceding the voting day.

Tim Pawlenty Will Likely Run In 2012

Pawlenty has set a deadline of 45 days regarding his announcement as a republican candidate for the president of the United States. With two gubernatorial wins in Minnesota, which is often referred to as a swing state, Pawlenty shows electability at the national level.
