The Ease Of The New DVR

There is this new concept in video technology called a digital video recorder. Okay, well it’s not really all that new. But it is new to a lot of people. It allows you to record and store literally hundreds of hours of television without cassette tapes.

The thing that hit me as a real revolutionary idea was the fact that the DVR can literally figure out what to record. You tell it you want to record some show, and it goes through the TV schedule and records every instance of that show without you lifting a finger.

All of a sudden, I don’t have to worry about dealing with the obnoxious habit of inserting a VHS tape, going through the programming interface to set the recorder to record, telling it when to stop, etc. The DVR does all that and does it better and in higher quality. It even lets you skip over entire commercial breaks.

When I read the article, DVRs were still pretty pricey. But since then, the cost has plummeted and I finally made the decision to go out and get one. I opted for Panasonic’s Replay TV, a reliable brand that I knew and a product that seemed pretty solid. And it has been amazing, but for a few minor issues.

The main negative is that it freezes up from time to time, but that is negligible, and the thing works as great now as the day I bought it.

Of course, everybody has a DVR nowadays. Some cable companies offer them as part of a cable package. Some people swear by the standalone Tivo brand. Overall the things work better and are stronger and faster than they were when I bought mine.

People really take these things for granted. Once upon a time, I had to watch a TV show whenever the network decided to schedule it. Now I do it exclusively on my own terms. It has been a revolution for TV watchers.

In fact, as I wrap up writing this article, I’m getting ready for a little relaxation time with one of my favorite shows. I have three episodes to catch up on. I couldn’t have done that without a DVR.
